I am interested in the relationship of the individual to the collective, & in the new identities that emerge when individuals come together. What arises when a shape encounters itself repeatedly, in varying orientation, distance & color? I explore these questions with organic shapes, and colors of high translucency. At the intersections where shape overlaps shape, new forms & colors are created, related to but distinct from their base elements. What emerges is a whole greater than the sum of its parts. The repercussions of distinct arrangements of form can be seen to parallel relations of individuals to each other and to the larger collective. In this way I use visual structure as a metaphor for social relationships, & for societal structures, histories & hierarchies.
